A new study has found that a new drug called Flibanserin, used to help women with low libido, is effective for women who don’t respond well to Viagra.

They found that women who took flibanserin, or a pill taken twice daily, had an increased chance of sexual arousal in a certain subset of women. This included those with a BMI of 30 or higher.
“This finding suggests that women who are not sexually aroused do not respond to flibanserin for the same reasons they do not respond to Viagra,” said Kavaler, the study’s lead author and a research assistant professor at the National Institutes of Health.
Flibanserin is a prescription medication taken to help men who suffer from low sexual desire. It has a high potential for abuse, and in most cases, women are not advised to use it. But the drug may be helpful for women who are not sexually aroused, Kavaler said.
“The idea of having an active woman who is taking flibanserin, as opposed to having a woman who is taking Viagra, is very intriguing,” she said. “It’s exciting to see that these findings can be replicated in a large sample of patients.”
For now, the study appears to support a long-term approach to treatment. A new study of women treated with Flibanserin is being conducted at the New York University School of Medicine, which is studying the effects of this drug for women.
